LEB Construction feeling good for Lampeter Wellbeing Centre

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

Refurbishment works commence on the transformation of Lampeter Leisure Centre to new community Wellbeing Centre

Ceredigion County Council has awarded LEB Construction with a contract to transform the existing Lampeter Leisure Centre into a new Wellbeing Centre for the local community.

The six-month programme’s scope of works, which is valued at £1.1m, includes the internal strip-out and reimagining of the current building to provide more open-plan space, a new mezzanine floor over part of the sports hall, breakout areas and multifunctional youth rooms.

Reaching far beyond its leisure centre beginnings, the new facility will provide support for the community across all age groups. This will include the aims of improving physical and mental health for all while also providing employment advice, training, along with wider housing and support for young people.

LEB will be working alongside the design team appointed by Ceredigion County Council, which consists of Quattro Design Architects, Davidson Walsh structural and civil engineering consultancy and MEP designers Withycombe Design Services.

The new gym area and upper rooms off the new mezzanine floor will benefit from more light through the installation of curtain walling to replace much of the blockwork gable wall.

New stud and plasterboard skimmed walls, lintels, carpentry, fire doors, flooring and a full redecoration will provide a more modern and uplifting appearance for the centre.

The sports hall will be treated to a newly laid surface with new sports pitch linings set into a lacquered finish.

Completing the renovation will be a new staff kitchen, suspended metal grid ceilings with inset panel lighting and a complete renewal of electrics, ventilation and plumbing.

LEB’s Contract Manager, Chris Farmery, was delighted with the start to the project: “We’ve been on-site since mid-August and we have hit the ground running, with the strip-out of the existing facility already 95% complete. This week we have the padstones being excavated and concrete poured while our trades are undertaking the first fix MEP works.”

Luke Baker, Managing Director, LEB Construction Limited, said: “We are delighted to be working with Ceredigion County Council once again and on such a brilliant new facility for the Lampeter community. The new proposals look exciting and we are looking forward to working with the local authority and the design team to get the doors open to the public in early 2023.”

Gary Davies has taken the reins as Project Manager to push the project forward and deliver a high-quality product.

The project works commenced on site on 15 August 2022 and we will be providing project progress updates each month before handing over a completed facility to Ceredigion County Council in February 2023.
