Lampeter Wellbeing Centre – Project Update No. 01

With work well underway to transform Lampeter Leisure Centre, here's our first progress report and insight to the progress on site

Having started on site towards the end of the summer, we are delighted with the progress made to date in transforming the existing leisure centre into the new Lampeter Wellbeing Centre.

The six-month programme that LEB Construction is on the ground delivering, with a project value of £1.1m, commenced with the complete strip-out of the existing facility, ready for the conversion works and installation of new facilities and services.

The Ceredigion County Council project will provide support for the community across all age groups. This will include the aim of improving physical and mental health for all while also providing employment advice and training, along with broader housing and support for young people.

A significant part of the project is the erection and installation of a new mezzanine floor to create additional first-floor space for a new gym and the installation of a new curtain wall that will provide more natural light inside and give the centre a more modern appearance on the outside.

For this and future progress reports, we have split the project down into a number of areas across the ground and first floors to show the progress on site:

Ground Floor

Area 1A – Lobby / Entrance

Works to create the new reception area have commenced, with the new look starting to take shape. First-fix electrical and mechanical ducting is being installed and studwork for partition walls will begin shortly.

A new fire alarm system is also being installed.

Area 1B – Consultation Rooms and Offices

These rooms have been formed with the erection of partition walls, which are due to be plastered this week.

Area 1C – Sports Hall

The sports hall will be treated to a newly laid surface, with new sports pitch linings set into a lacquered finish.

The existing floor finish is to be removed soon, before a latex surface is laid down, all in preparation for the final floor finish to be applied in the New Year.

Area 1D – Gym

Works on the new gym are due to commence imminently.

First Floor

Area 2A – Area Mezzanine Floor

All the steelwork to form the mezzanine structure has been installed, allowing for a new concrete deck to be poured, creating the additional space on the first floor.

Area 2B – Upper Rooms

With the concrete deck in place, we have begun constructing the stud partition walls that will shape the new rooms on the first floor. First-fix electrics, plumbing, fire and works for the lift have all begun and are progressing well.

Area 2C – Practical Skills Room

With the first-fix MEP complete, this room is now scheduled to be plastered.

Area 2D – Kitchen

First-fix works are progressing before the kitchen is plastered.

External/Façade

Area 3 – Curtain Wall

The transformational curtain walling has been ordered from Essential Aluminium, a specialist aluminium fabricator based in Newcastle upon Tyne. This work is scheduled to commence in the New Year with the installation of the curtain walling.

Area 4 – External Works

Works consist of adaptions to the existing drainage, new paths and fencing.

We are continuing to work with the design team, obtaining construction details where required and ensuring that the works are completed in accordance with the architect’s and engineer’s designs.

Furthermore, works that have been carried out to date have been inspected and signed off by Building Control, who we will continue to invite to site as works progress.

LEB's Project Manager, Gary Davies, said: “We are delighted with the progress that has been made on the project to date. We are on programme and working closely with the design team to bring the project together. It’s been great to have the client on site for regular visits and to receive their support.”

The project works commenced on site on 15 August 2022, and we will provide project progress updates each month before handing over a completed facility to Ceredigion County Council in February 2023.
